Watering Guidelines

Caring for your new landscaping can be intimidating, following these guidelines can help. The first two weeks is the establishment phase and will require you to water daily. When watering you want to ensure the soil is saturated to a 6-8" depth. The time of day you water matters, so try your best to water in the early morning. Using a hose or drip line irrigation works best, please avoid relying on sprinklers as they are not ideal for new plantings. After the establishment phase, in weeks 3-6, watering every 2-3 days, depending on rainfall and temperatures, should be sufficient. At 6 weeks your plants should have taken root and will require watering a couple of times a week. Doing so will encourage deeper root growth and plant resilience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question

Am I watering my landscaping enough?

Check the soil by sticking your finger or a screwdriver 4–6 inches into the soil. If it’s dry at that depth, it’s time to water. Are your plants wilting? Plants wilting in the morning need water. If they perk up in the evening, they may just be heat-stressed, not dry. Yellowing or Browning Leaves? May indicate overwatering or underwatering. Check soil before adjusting.

Question

When is the best time of day to water?

Early morning is the best time of day. Midday watering increases evaporation, wasting water and stressing plants.

Question

What are common mistakes to avoid when caring for new landscaping?

Avoid overwatering, underwatering, and midday watering to ensure healthy plant development. Infrequent deep watering or light sprinkling encourages shallow roots. Also, make sure your mulch is 2-3" deep around the plants to help retain moisture, but not touching the stems.
